Whistler, Red Bull 5000 mountain bike race

Imagine over 200 riders participating in the day’s final race. All racers start at once on top of the mountain in

the snow at 12 p.m. sharp. First one to cross the finish line at the bottom wins. Leave it to Red Bull to come up

with this. The weather was less than perfect, visibility at the 2500 foot elevation was less than 50 feet. All I had

to do was lay in the muck and wait for the riders to come by. After 2 hours of hiking in the rain and looking over

my shoulder for bears, the racers flew by me one by one. It was all over in less than 12 minutes. Some riders had

flat tires already, with the other half of the mountain in front of them yet. It was an epic race and experience,

and in hindsight,  I couldn’t have asked for better weather.
